Combs' kickoff returns help lift Dora past Grady

GRADY — Dora sophomore Aaron Combs returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, including the opening kickoff, and the Coyotes got off to a fast start before holding off Grady 51-42 on Friday in a 6-man District 2 clash.

Combs also had touchdown runs of 50 and 2 yards as Dora (5-1, 2-0 district) opened leads of 14-0 and 25-7 before the Bronchos (2-4, 0-3) staged a late comeback.

Senior Lane Faver connected with senior Conner Rooney for a 35-yard TD pass for the Coyotes, and Rooney also scored on a 1-yard run. Junior Cole Kircher added rushing scores of 15 and 25 yards for Dora.

Meantime, junior Zane Rush scored on a 20-yard run, threw scoring passes of 28 yards to eighth-grader Zander Ciancio and 46 yards to eighth-grader Hays Rush and caught a 17-yard TD strike from Ciancio. Other touchdowns came on passes of 35 yards from eighth-grader Noah Stanfield to Ciancio and 66 yards from Ciancio to Hays Rush, who was also in on a team-high 11 tackles.

Both teams are back in district action on Friday, with Dora hosting Elida and Grady visiting Floyd.

Elida 66, Ramah 12 — At Elida, the Tigers improved to 4-2 with a lopsided victory over the Mustangs (3-3). Elida led 24-0 at the quarter and ended the game at halftime on the 50-point run with a 40-point second frame.

Senior Mason Pritchett ran for four touchdowns and sophomore Daltyn Taylor added three rushing scores for Elida, with Pritchett tallying from 22, 46, 50 and 28 yards and Taylor going in from 20, 20 and 22 yards.

Other scores for the Tigers came on runs of 4 yards by junior Seth Jimenez and 25 yards by freshman Cason Norman, and a 4-yard pass play from sophomore Dylan Dobbins to Norman.

Melrose 54, Dulce 0 — At Dulce, the Hawks (1-4) were no match for the Buffaloes, who also ended the non-district game on the 50-point mercy rule at halftime. Freshman Jaxon Odom returned the opening kickoff for a score, and the rout was on.

Sophomore quarterback Josiah Roybal threw six TD passes — two to junior Dathan Yeary covering 58 and 52 yards, and one each to sophomore Cy Draper (40 yards), sophomore Josh Roybal (22), junior Blake Curtis (15) and sophomore Chance Brittenum (25).

Melrose (4-3, 1-0 8-man District 3) returns to district play on Friday night when the Buffs travel to Clayton (5-2, 0-2).

In other action on Friday night, Gateway Christian (5-0, 3-0) posted a 56-6 win in 6-man District 2 over Floyd at Roswell. The Broncos’ lone tally came on a touchdown reception by junior Benton Cain.
