Gattis beats Yucca to improve to 3-3 for season

CLOVIS — The Gattis seventh-grade football team improved to 3-3 on Monday by beating the Yucca Chaps 42-8.

Abel Chavira led the Cubs with more than 300 yards on the ground, including touchdown runs of 65, 35, 55, 50 and 70 yards. Erik Merino added the other TD on a 30-yard run, while Irving Mendoza booted all six extra points.

Defensively, Mendoza forced and recovered a fumble, while Merino and Payton Kerby each had a fumble recovering and Andrew Fenstermaker posted a pass interception.

The Cubs return to action next Tuesday in a 4 p.m. contest at Portales.
