Band takes First Place Regional Grand Champion at contest

The Clovis High School Wildcat Band came in First Place Regional Grand Champions last weekend at the Bands of America Regionals held at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff.

Band Director Bill Allred said the band won outstanding music, outstanding visual, outstanding general effect and were the Class 3A Champions for their preliminary performances.

The top 12 bands moved from the preliminaries on to the finals, Allred said. The band again swept all the outstanding awards and became Grand Champions. They competed to win against the Arizona State Champions, as well as the California, Colorado and Texas band state champions.

"I think the kids just put in, straight- up hard work, the time, enthusiasm, self-confidence, great teamwork as well as parental/school and community support," Allred said when asked by The News to what he attributes the win.

The title of the show was "Points of Reflection," and songs played were: "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, "Get Out" by Chvrches, "Through the Looking Glass" by Jess Turner and "The Parting Glass" by Matt Conaway.

Renda Truong, president of the Clovis Marching Band Boosters, and Gerri Dawson, vice president, sent the following statement from the club in an email: "This is the band's first time going to AZ BOA. From leaving Friday night on a bus and waking up at the crack of dawn their energy was on 10. Elevations was a challenge adding the terrain not to mention the change in weather. But through all the natural adversity the kids still maintained their energy and focus to give their best in prelims and finals. Out of 17 teams they were the top twelve for finals. With finals being late in the evening the band stayed energized and focused. They received best music, best general effects and best visual effect. They won first place in their division 3A. Preliminary. And for finals they got outstanding music performance, outstanding visual performance and outstanding general effect. Won first place to be regional champions. They showed class and support for the other bands that were present."
