Lady Rams end losing streak, sweep Ruidoso

RUIDOSO — Portales High’s volleyball team ended a four-match losing streak on Thursday with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-12 victory over Ruidoso.

Senior setter Maebri Knox posted a double-double with team highs of 11 digs and 16 assists for PHS (5-7), while junior outside hitter Audrey Paden had nine kills, five digs and a pair of aces.

“We finally played in control (of the match),” said Lady Rams coach Jacki Bailey, whose squad led virtually the entire way. “We limited our errors and played with the composure we haven’t had at times.”

Senior Presley Huey had six kills and six digs for the Lady Warriors (2-8).

Lady Cats turn back PHS — On Tuesday night, Clovis High posted its second victory of the campaign over Portales with a 25-19, 25-22, 25-23 decision at the Ram Athletic Center.

Senior outside hitter Gizelle Petner led a balanced attack for the Lady Wildcats (8-8), posting nine kills. Senior setter Ella Howalt earned a double-double with 10 digs and 15 aces.

“The girls probably played their best match this season,” Clovis coach Darrel Ray said. “We’ve been passing better and better. Portales was doing a pretty good job of playing defense after the first game.”

Meantime, Knox just missed a double-double for the Lady Rams with 10 digs and nine assists. Freshman middle hitter Skyler Massey had five kills and three blocks, and Paden finished with five kills and 11 digs.

“We’ve been in just about every game, but we’re not getting over the hump,” Bradley said. “We’re not putting enough (scoring) streaks together.”

Portales played at Texico on Saturday and is slated to welcome Hobbs to the RAC on Tuesday night. Meantime, Clovis’ next outing is on Thursday at Lovington.
