Scholastic assessment scores for the state of New Mexico show Clovis schools near the average mark for student proficiency in multiple subjects while Portales schools show slightly above-average proficiencies.

Clovis schools' weakest subject matter was math with a 23% proficiency rate while Portales schools' weakest area was early literacy.

The test results for the 2021-22 school year were released at the beginning of the month by the Public Education Department.

The scores measure the proficiency of students in English language arts, math and science.

There's a test just for kindergarten through second graders for "early literacy."

Clovis Superintendent Renee Russ said, "When looking globally in terms of district-level proficiency, our performance paralleled what has been reported by the NMPED statewide."

Portales Superintendent Johnnie Cain said, "Although our results are not where we would like them to be or expect them to be, we realize there was a great deal of work to rebound from with the pandemic school closures and online classes."

The statewide results show just over 156,000 students were tested in ELA and math. Of that statewide group 34% were proficient in ELA and 25% in math.

Statewide over 60,000 students were tested in early literacy with 27% being proficient in the skills.

Statewide over 66,000 students were tested in science with 33% being proficient in the subject.

Clovis ELA scores show 32% of the district's students are proficient in that area while Portales shows a 35% proficiency.

Early literacy has a 27% statewide proficiency rate; Clovis is at 27% and Portales at 24%.

Math results statewide showed a 25% proficiency while in Clovis it was 23 % and 29% in Portales.

Science results statewide were 33%. In Clovis the proficiency rate was 33% and 37% in Portales.

Dora schools showed some of the highest proficiencies compared to other school systems in Curry and Roosevelt counties: ELA 47%, early literacy less than 20%, math 49% and science 45%.
