Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Rooney Moon Broadcasting bought by Nevada media company

Rich Hudson, president and CEO of Global One Media, Inc., a Las Vegas, Nev., based media company, said he recently bought Rooney Moon Broadcasting in Clovis and Portales because he “fell in love with what Steve Rooney and Duffy Moon had created.”

Monday, Hudson said he is going to pay $1.1 million for the company, the sale of which has yet to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission. The approval should happen in early September, he said.

Hudson said he was impressed with the company’s “market sound” and just “fell in love with the Duffy and Steve story.”

Global One Media Inc., is a radio company, that touts itself as “your premiere content source for entertainment, news, sports, social media marketing and podcasts,” as stated on an Instagram website.

“I think it will work very nicely with (my recent acquisitions) in Elko, Nev.,” Hudson said. “I think the two will be able to work very well together.”

Global One Media Inc. acquired “six outlets in Elko, NV, from Ruby Radio for $1 million. Included in the deal are Hot AC KHIX (Mix 96.7)/Carlin-Elko, Country KBGZ (Big Country 103.9). Classic Hits KUOL (94.5 Kool FM), K263BD/SPring Creek-Elko, K266AB and K299AN,” as was reported on news.radio-online.com in February.

Hudson said he has no plans to change the formats of the Clovis and Portales stations.

“Rooney Moon Broadcasting has grown to be the largest media outlet on the High Plains of Eastern New Mexico, operating Mix 107.5, 105.9 KSEL Country, Big 101.5, and AM1450 Cow Country,” as stated on the rooneymoon.com website.

The story Hudson “fell in love with” as told on the rooneymoon.com website is of “two young radio nerds from San Diego” who “decided it would be a good idea to go buy a radio station.”

A call to Rooney Moon Broadcasting was not returned.

“Steve Rooney and Duffy Moon met at KFMB radio in San Diego, California, in 1992,” rooneymoon.com states.“They worked together in various roles within the company for almost a decade, before branching out individually for a short time.  Rooney had stints as a morning host and program director, as well as selling radio automation equipment.  Moon enjoyed production director roles, as well as on-air and marketing positions.  But, their fast friendship brought them back together in late 2001 when Steve called Duffy and asked, “Hey, you wanna go buy a radio station?”

“They actually wound up with four stations covering eastern New Mexico and west Texas.  Rooney and Moon brought their idea of major market programming, production, and promotion to small market radio in September of 2002,” the website states.

“In December, 2016, Rooney Moon Broadcasting lost one of it’s founding members, Steve Rooney.  Best friend and business partner, Duffy Moon, continues the legacy today,” the website states.

Rick Keefer, owner and manager of Zia Broadcasting, which owns four stations in Clovis and one FM station in Borger, Texas, commented about the Global One Media acquisition.

Asked what he thinks about having a new owner come to town, Keefer said: “I would welcome a new operator to our community, who will be able to help identify the needs of listeners and how to best serve our communities.”
