Late basket in OT lifts Foxes past Buffs

FORT SUMNER — Sophomore Joaquin Segura hit a 16-foot runner with three seconds left in overtime on Thursday night, giving Fort Sumner a 57-56 District 6-1A boys victory over Melrose.

The Buffaloes (13-7, 4-3) had taken the lead on a 3-point basket by sophomore Dathan Yeary with 18 seconds left. The game seesawed, with the Foxes (13-3, 6-1) leading by six in the first half before the Buffs rallied to go up eight early in the final stanza.

Junior Clay Norman scored 21 points for Fort Sumner, while Segura had 16 and sophomore Chance Thomson 10. For Melrose, senior Logan DeVaney netted 19 points, senior Brandon Garcia had 11 and sophomore Michael Cardonita added 10.

In other area boys games on Thursday:

Clovis Christian 67, Grady 53 — At CCS, the Eagles maintained their District 6-1A lead, using a 17-7 second-quarter surge to open a 14-point cushion at the half.

Juniors Carter Teune, Noah Gershon and Easton Adair funneled in 21, 12 and 11 points, respectively, for CCS (16-5, 7-1). Meantime, the Bronchos (7-16, 2-6) got 17 points from junior Carlos Marin and 11 from freshman Jax Piepkorn.

Santa Rosa 47, Texico 43 — In District 6-2A at Santa Rosa, the Lions erased a three-point halftime deficit by outscoring the Wolverines 16-8 in the third stanza.

Junior Markos Chavez scored 14 points and senior Jaron Sanchez and sophomore Jykub Gage netted 10 each for Santa Rosa (12-10, 1-3). Sophomore Cade Figg led Texico (11-9, 2-2) with 13 points, and junior Max Villareal chipped in 10.

Elida 55, Gateway Christian 19 — The host Tigers rolled to a District 4-1A win over the Warriors behind 21 points from senior Rylan Creighton.

Juniors Aiden Yates and Jose Jimenez added 11 and 10, respectively, for Elida (17-3, 4-0). Freshman Barton Pieratt paced the Warriors (3-14, 2-2) with seven points.

In girls action on Thursday:

Fort Sumner 50, Melrose 32 — At Fort Sumner, the Vixens maintained a comfortable lead in District 6-1A, holding the Lady Buffs to 19 points over the final three periods.

Junior Olivia Lucero tallied 11 points and freshman Allyssa Casaus added 10 for Fort Sumner (16-2, 6-0). Only three players broke into the scoring column for Melrose (12-7, 2-3), with junior Isabelle Sena accounting for 18 points.

Santa Rosa 43, Texico 29 — The Lady Wolverines did just fine in the second and third stanzas, but couldn’t overcome the Lady Lions holding them scoreless in each of the other two frames in District 6-2A.

Santa Rosa (13-8, 3-1) got off to a 16-0 lead at the quarter, but by the end of the third period the Lady Wolverines had closed to 39-29. Santa Rosa scored the only four points in the final eight minutes.

Junior Daelyn Pachecho tallied 14 points and senior Summer Storey added 11 for Santa Rosa. Junior Catelyn Breshears provided most of the punch for Texico (6-14, 0-4) with 24 points.
