Mules post 3-OT victory at Littlefield

LITTLEFIELD — Muleshoe pulled out a wild one on Friday night against rival Littlefield, staying hot as the Mules prepare for the start of the Class 3A Division I playoffs.

Invoking the new UIL rule where teams get one play for essentially a 2-point conversion beginning with the third overtime, senior quarterback Zach Hasley converted with a run after the Mules stopped Littlefield’s attempt to claim a 38-36 District 2-3A Division I win over the Wildcats.

It was the Mules’ third consecutive win and lifted them to the .500 mark for the season.

Muleshoe (5-5, 3-1 district), which had already earned the No. 2 seed from the district, returns to Littlefield on Thursday to face Brownfield (3-7) in a 7 p.m. (CST) start.

Meantime, Farwell in District 1-2A Division I and Bovina in District 2-2A Division I had already wrapped up their district’s No. 2 seeds. The Steers (8-2, 4-1), who edged Olton 28-20 on Friday, face Post (4-6) in a 7 p.m. contest on Friday at Levelland, while the Mustangs (4-6) take on Seagraves (7-3) in a 7 p.m. Friday tilt at Sudan.

At Littlefield, the Mules rallied from a 28-14, third-quarter deficit with a 76-yard pass from Hasley to junior Irvin Torres and a 30-yard run by sophomore Zach Radloff, adding the tying 2PAT after the latter score.

Each team scored on a passing play and added a 2PAT in the first overtime, but both failed to score in the second OT.

The Mules compiled 437 yards, with sophomore Daniel Sianez rushing for 215 yards and Torres catching five passes for 124 yards and two scores. Hasley finished with three TD passes and 190 yards on 11-of-23, and also had the game’s first tally on a 2-yard run.

Farwell 28, Olton 20 — At Farwell, the Steers battled through some sickness and injuries to pull out the win over the Mustangs as sophomore running back Corey Stancell scored on runs of 26 and 57 yards in the final stanza.

Farwell played without starting QB Alec Actkinson, who broke a bone in his foot the previous week in a 36-35 loss at Panhandle. Coach Darren Kelley said he hopes Actkinson can be available for this week’s playoff clash.

The Steers also lost their placekicker, senior tight end/linebacker Jackson Wilbourn, to a season-ending knee injury against Olton. Stancell replaced him and kicked both PATs for Farwell in the final stanza.

Stancell went over 2,000 rushing yards for the season, gaining 148 on 18 totes against Olton (6-4, 2-3). He now has 2,096 yards and 35 rushing touchdowns for the season.
