Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
CLOVIS — The Clovis 88101 ZIP code wasn’t the leader among the state for new COVID-19 infections over the weekend. But it was close.
The New Mexico Department of Health confirmed 1,786 new cases of COVID-19 between Saturday and Monday, including 78 in Curry County and 15 in Roosevelt County.
Of the Curry County cases, 68 came from the 88101 ZIP code. That was third in the state, behind the 70 from both Albuquerque (87121) and Hobbs (88240). Four of the top six ZIP codes for new cases came from the Southeast region that includes Curry and Roosevelt counties, while the other six came from Bernalillo County.
Two local deaths were recorded among the 14 reported statewide, both in Curry County. Both were females, one in her 50s and another in her 70s, and each was hospitalized.
Wednesday was the last day of a state requirement for facemasks in public buildings. The requirement was implemented Aug. 20, with the governor’s office noting it would remain in effect until at least Sept. 15. As of Tuesday morning, Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s office had not issued a directive extending the public health order. The DOH did announce a remote news conference 2 p.m. today. The conference will be streamed on the NMDOH Facebook page.
