Official: Curry fair will be 'unorthodox'

CLOVIS — The 2021 Curry County Fair will be somewhat “unorthodox this year as far as what people expect to see,” said K.C. Messick, the general manager of the Curry County Events Center and Fairgrounds.

The fair will be held August 10th through 14th at the fairgrounds.

Included in what's new this year is the GoldStars Tribute Wall, a traveling show in tribute to the fallen soldiers from the Gulf War, Messick said. The wall will be at the fair the 12th, 13th and 14th.

“We're hoping to (get) a lot of people from the Cannon Air Force Base out here with the memorial wall,” he said. “We're just trying to get the community out and back to the fair.”

Part of the effort to attract people is the $5 a day gate admission, which includes everything at the fair, he said. Kids 12 years of age and under are free. Parking is free.

Also new this year is the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association event on Friday and Saturday nights, the 13th and 14th to be held in the outdoor Mounted Patrol Arena.

The Tumbleweed Crossing Wild West Comedy Gunfight & Stunt Show will take place in the midway with three shows a day, he said.

“We opted to not do the major concerts this year because of the uncertainty of COVID,” he said. But, the fair will feature local live music.

On Thursday night, the classic rock band, Marshall Law, will play.

“Everything this year is included in the gate admission,” he said.

On Friday night, the local Tejano band, El Grupo Mezcal, will appear, he said. And on Saturday night, a country band “to be determined” will be featured.

Still included at the fair are the more typical events such as the 4-H Indoor Exhibit and the 4-H Indoor Exhibits Open Division, the junior livestock show and sale, the arts show as well as cooking and photography contests, for example.

The Moov-It Truck Pull to benefit United Way will be held on Saturday morning, he said.

“All kinds of food will be sold with a lot of returning vendors from 2019,” he said. Funnel cakes, hamburgers, barbecue and a wide variety of food will be for sale.

There will be an air conditioned indoor pavilion and outdoor tents where people can sit and eat, he said.
