Clovis man receives 19-year sentence

CLOVIS — A Clovis man was sentenced to 19 years Wednesday in connection to an April larceny.

Gary Marez, 40, was found guilty by a Curry County jury of aggravated assault, larceny of a firearm, tampering with evidence and resisting evading or obstructing an officer.

According to a release from the district attorney’s office, Clovis police officers discovered Marez when they were dispatched to a burglary on the 1700 block of East Seventh Street and captured him after a short foot pursuit. Marez was found to have outstanding warrants in Curry, Quay and Bernalillo counties.

Marez, who was on probation when the April incident occurred, received a four-year sentence enhancement on each count for habitual offender status.

An attempt to contact Francis Rio, Marez’ attorney, was unsuccessful.
