Farwell, Muleshoe boys take home victories

The Farwell and Muleshoe’s boys got their 2020-21 basketball seasons off to solid starts on Tuesday with home victories.
Farwell dominated start to finish in thumping Hale Center 65-24 while the Mules put together a strong second half to dispose of Morton 50-40.
The Steers led by 11 at the quarter and steadily pulled away from the Owls, who were also playing their season opener. Grayson Waldrop led Farwell with 19 points, followed by Slade Perkins with 11, while Hale Center’s top scorer was Drew Smith with eight.
Muleshoe trailed 23-21 at halftime before rallying back and taking control down the stretch. Juniors Brennen Davis and Dok Gardner led the way for the Mules with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
In area girls action, Muleshoe picked up its first win of the season on Nov. 14 with a 68-43 victory at Hale Center before dropping a 38-23 verdict at Hereford on Tuesday. Meantime, Farwell fell to 1-2 for the season with a 54-38 setback at Sundown on Tuesday night.
The Lady Mules jumped out to a 22-6 first-quarter lead and were never threatened in their win over Hale Center (1-2). Junior Natalie Ambriz poured in 23 points for Muleshoe, while the Lady Owls got seven points each from four players — Lorena Espinosa, Makayla Espinosa, Layla Juarez and Kailea Lopez.
Muleshoe fell behind 11-2 in the first quarter at Hereford and could never catch up. Ambriz again topped the Lady Mules, scoring 13 points, while sophomore Lillie Skiles put in 12 points for the Lady Whitefaces (2-0).
Meantime, Farwell couldn’t overcome a slow start at Sundown, falling behind the Lady Roughnecks 31-16 at halftime.
Senior Emily Rodriguez and junior Karli Torrez led a balanced attack for Sundown (2-1) with 10 points apiece, while senior Presley Agee easily topped all scorers with 23 tallies for Farwell.
