Police seek help in locating shooter

CLOVIS - Police are asking for public assistance in locating a dark blue Dodge Stratus involved in a shooting on Tuesday night.

According to a police news release, a CPD detective was in the area of 10th and Ash streets at 11:36 p.m. Tuesday when the vehicle passed him at a high rate of speed. The vehicle did not have a license plate or any type of registration displayed, the release said.

A pursuit followed with the car's driver at one point firing several shots with a handgun.

The pursuit was canceled near 21st and Echols and the driver remained at large late Wednesday afternoon.

According to the release:

• The driver of the Dodge Stratus initially pulled over and stopped in the area of Eighth and Sycamore. But as the detective exited his unit, "the driver (of the Dodge) ... put the vehicle in reverse, almost striking the detective unit. The vehicle fled the scene at a high rate of speed."

• The shots were fired "presumably" in the direction of the police car in the area of Mabry Drive and Schepps Boulevard.

• As the pursuit continued through town, the detective reported seeing what he described as sparks or flashes coming from the front driver side of the vehicle.

Police said they have no additional information about the vehicle or its driver.

Anyone with information is asked to call CPD at 575-763-9481.
