Area temperatures on the rise

Just two weeks ago, eastern New Mexico was in the deep freeze — temperatures in the 20s and snow people in front yards.

This week, weather forecasters say we could see temperatures near triple digits.

“Record-breaking temperatures will ... pose heat-related health risks to those working outdoors this week, especially in east central to southeastern New Mexico Thursday and Friday,” the National Weather Service warns.

“Above normal temperatures could continue through the weekend. Spotty to scattered areas of critical fire weather will return each

afternoon Thursday through early next week. The areas most likely to

observe critical conditions include the central to northeastern highlands and the adjacent high plains of New Mexico where low humidities will combine with above normal temperatures and strong winds.”

NWS predicts high temperatures in the 90s the rest of the week throughout eastern New Mexico. Friday’s forecast for Portales on Friday is “hot,” with a high expected of 97.

For trivia buffs, the first day of summer is June 20.
