CANYON, Texas — The Clovis High track and field team advanced through its second week of competition this past weekend, as the boys finished third among 10 teams, the girls seventh among nine at the Canyon Invitational.
The Clovis boys tallied 97 points, 37 behind champion Tascosa. Amarillo High finished second with 127 points.
Canyon Randall (94) and Lubbock Coronado (93) rounded out the boys top five.
Amarillo High won a top-heavy girls meet with 186.5 points. All the top four girls teams scored over 100 points, with Canyon Randall taking second (161.5), Amarillo Tascosa third (111.5) and Canyon fourth (111).
Amarillo Caprock completed the top five with 32 points, followed by Lubbock Coronado in sixth at 20. Seventh-place Clovis had seven points, all of which were earned by Camryn Barros, who took second place in the 5A-6A pole vault with a mark of 10 feet, 6 inches. Canyon Randall’s Katerina Bush won with 11 feet even.
The Clovis boys’ third-place finish was fueled by a 1-2 punch of Jerrick Maldonado and T.J. Gregg — and vice-versa — in the 5A-6A 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Maldonado was first in the 800 (1:57.56), Gregg in the 1,600 (4:26.56).
Gregg’s second-place time in the 800 was 1:59.01; Maldonado’s was 4:27.02 in the 1,600.
Also adding some fuel for Clovis were Ethan Culiver — who took first in the 5A-6A boys 400-meter dash, with a time of :51.04 — and Pacer Hill, who won the boys pole vault thanks to his 14-foot mark. And the boys 4x400-meter relay team of Culiver, Brandon Mason, Maldonado and Skyler Segura captured first with a time of 3:27.46.
Zecheriah Gonzales took second place in the 5A-6A boys shot put, with his 47-foot, 7 1/2-inch mark. And he added a point for the Wildcats with his sixth-place finish in the boys 5A-6A discus throw (123 feet, 9 inches).
Clovis’ boys 4x800-meter relay team of Nehemiah Gonzales, Juan Lozano, Aiden Olsen and Colten Wolf took fourth with a time of 9:36.98. Wolf was fifth in the 3,200-meter run with a time of 10:45.31. And the Wildcat boys 4x200-meter relay team of Segura, Hill, Robert Nora and Andrew Hall were sixth with a time of 1:37.40.
Clovis will compete in the Bulldog Relays at Plainview, Texas this coming weekend.
