Tarleton routs ENMU in opener
February 23, 2020
PORTALES — Tarleton State scored early and often and kept Eastern New Mexico University’s baseball team reeling with a 17-5 rout of the Greyhounds in Friday’s opener of a four-game Lone Star Conference series at Greyhound Field.
The teams were slated to play a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday, then finish it off with a 1 p.m. nine-inning contest on Sunday.
The Texans (6-5, 6-5 LSC) scored in every inning in a game stopped after seven by the 10-run rule. Senior Blake Burns keyed a four-run first against ENMU starter Blake Frye (0-1) with a two-run triple as Tarleton sent 10 men to the plate in the frame.
ENMU (1-10, 1-10) cut its deficit in half with two runs in the bottom of the first, but didn’t score again until the fifth. By that time the Hounds were trailing 14-2.
Tarleton State finished with 12 hits, with senior Luke Morton leading the way by going 3-for-3 with five RBIs — all in the first four innings. Meantime, senior Tyler Fowler went 3-for-4 and scored five runs.
The Hounds were unable to take full advantage of four Texans errors. Tarleton starter Justin Walton (2-1) allowed three runs (none earned) on four hits, with two walks and seven strikeouts over five innings.
Frye, making his first career start, lasted just two innings, giving up eight earned runs on five hits with four walks, four hit batsmen and two strikeouts. There were eight hit batsmen in the game, five by ENMU pitchers.
Second baseman Trevor Moses had two of the Hounds’ five hits, including a double, and drove in a pair of runs.
