1965: Residents of the Bella Vista Addition north of Clovis were concerned about packs of stray dogs, “chasing and biting children,” the Clovis News-Journal reported.

City Attorney Harry Patton said officials were spending almost $13,000 per year on the dog problem and had recently authorized the employment of a second dog officer to assist in rounding up the animals.

The city of Clovis picked up 2,660 stray dogs during 1964 and only 179 had been claimed by their owners, officials said. More than 2,300 dogs had been “disposed of” during the year, Patton said.

Patton reminded residents that “The family is responsible for the action of family pets.”
