Friday prep roundup: Texico routs Eunice

TEXICO — Texico’s boys made short work of Eunice on Friday night.

Storming out to a 35-15 halftime lead, the Wolverines cruised to a 78-45 win over the Cardinals.

It was a rematch of the Class 2A state football finals, which Eunice won over Texico at home in late November.

Senior Luke Phipps scored a personal-best 25 points for Texico (11-4), while junior Gabriel Bailey (14 points) and sophomore Cade Collins (12) also had personal scoring highs.

Junior Hayden Dean poured in 21 points for the Cardinals (9-8), but he was one of only four Eunice players to score in the contest.

In other Friday area boys tilts:

Dora 63, Lake Arthur 36 — The Coyotes rolled to a 13-2 lead at the quarter and went on to easily dispatch the visiting Panthers and improve to 2-0 in District 4-1A.

Senior Haiden Padgett led Dora (8-8 overall) with 17 points, followed by sophomore Cache Skelley (16) and junior Austin Wall (10). For Lake Arthur, sophomore Adrian Rangel (18) and junior Adrian Guillen (15) accounted for all but three of the team’s points.

Vega 48, Farwell 30 — The host Longhorns grabbed the Texas District 3-2A lead, limiting the Steers to 11 first-half points.

Senior Carson Kirkland was the only player in double figures for either team, scoring 12 for Vega (18-5, 3-0 district). Junior Jose Rodriguez led the Steers (17-8, 1-1) with seven points.

Meantime, in the girls matchup, Vega remained unbeaten for the season (28-0, 4-0) with a 51-27 win over the Lady Blue (20-8, 3-1).

Tatum 72, Elida 53 — The Coyotes won a showdown in District 4-1A, breaking the game open with a 19-6 scoring edge in the third quarter.

Sophomore Hayden Mullins led Tatum (12-6, 2-0) with 29 points, while junior Kivan Cardenas had 17. Junior Teagan Burton paced the Tigers (15-3, 1-1) with 15 points, and sophomore Ryan Creighton scored 12.

Gateway Christian 58, Floyd 35 — Up by eight at the intermission, the Warriors pulled away in the second half by holding Floyd to 13 points in the District 4-1A matchup.

Gateway (9-6, 1-1) rode 17 points from senior Wes Tipton, 16 from senior Joe Waide and 10 from sophomore Luke Tipton to the victory. Junior Juan Alba-Beltran posted 10 points for the Broncos (1-13, 0-2).

In Friday area girls clashes:

Dora 67, Lake Arthur 15 — The Lady Coyotes cruised into halftime with an overwhelming 45-3 lead and won with a running clock during the final two stanzas. Senior Randi Crandall scored 24 points to lead four players in double figures for Dora (5-10, 1-1), followed by Makayla Burnett (14), Faith Jasso (11) and Breann Rodriguez (10), while Alejandra Gonzalez put in six for the Lady Panthers.

Texico 37, Eunice 26 — The Lady Wolverines won a low-scoring matchup at home over Eunice for the second time this season, taking control by outscoring the Lady Cardinals 23-9 during the middle two quarters.

Senior Ashley Hill led Texico (8-8) with 11 points, followed by junior Rachel Phipps with 10. Junior Kendra Caballero was the top scorer for Eunice (4-10) with seven points.

Gateway Christian 55, Floyd 27 — The host Lady Broncos hung tough for the first quarter, trailing just 10-9, before Gateway pulled away in a District 4-1A contest.

Freshman M.J. Stephens led all scorers with 25 points for the Lady Warriors (12-2, 3-0). Senior Anahi Chavez topped Floyd (3-12, 1-1) with 15 points.

Tatum 62, Elida 24 — The Lady Coyotes (9-6, 2-0) opened a 16-0 lead at the quarter and never looked back, riding 20 points from freshman Ciara Jimenez and 12 from senior Taylor Graham to the District 4-1A victory. Junior Tiffany Ortega collected nine points for the Lady Tigers (1-16, 0-2).

In Thursday area action:

Melrose boys 74, Logan 55 — The Class 1A top-ranked Buffaloes, held under 50 points for the first time this season in each of their previous two games, roared to a 52-27 halftime lead at Logan and cruised to a District 6-1A victory.

Junior Tate Sorgen led the Buffs (16-1, 2-0) with 21 points, followed by seniors Tristan Sena with 17 and Dylan Valentine with 15. For the Longhorns (11-7, 1-1), junior Dante Sanchez finished with 23 points and freshman Michael Sena had 11.

Logan 54, Melrose girls 47 — Senior Karli Webb poured in 29 points and the Lady Longhorns rallied with a 19-11 scoring edge in the final stanza to turn back Melrose.

Sophomore Kyndall Ragland chipped in 11 points for Logan (15-3, 2-0). Sophomore Johanna Roybal had four 3-pointers and 14 points for the Lady Buffs (13-3, 1-1), while senior Shannon May scored 12 and junior Hailey Martin added nine.
