Angelo outlasts ENMU men

January 22, 2020

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University’s men were close to keeping their recent charge going over the weekend.

For the second time in three days, though, the Greyhounds fell a bit short as Angelo State used a late 14-2 run to fuel a 74-70 Lone Star Conference victory on Saturday at Greyhound Arena.

ENMU (5-10, 5-5 LSC) had won five of seven after an 0-6 start before dropping a 62-60 decision to Lubbock Christian at home on Thursday.

In this one, the Hounds trailed for much of the first half, then rallied to take a 38-37 lead on two free throws by sophomore guard Garrick Sherrod with 17:15 left. That was the first of nine lead changes — to go with nine ties — over the next 11 minutes.

Deng Kuany’s basket put ENMU in front 60-57 with 6:21 left, but a 3-pointer by the Rams’ Jeremy Hayes retied it on the next trip and started the game-breaking run for ASU (11-3, 7-3), capped by a 3-point play from senior forward Andres Ibarguen with 31 seconds left to make it 71-62.

Ibarguen, who also had a game-high eight rebounds, shared Rams scoring honors with senior guard Collin Turner with 18 points each, while reserve forward Ronald Bell chipped in 11 points. Meantime, junior guard Jose Serrano led all scorers with 19 points off the bench while adding team highs of five rebounds and six assists for ENMU, and junior guard Devin Pullum had 10 points.

Angelo shot 53 percent from the field, including 21-of-30 (70 percent) from inside the arc.

ENMU hits the road for east Texas this week, visiting Texas A&M International on Thursday night and Texas A&M-Kingsville on Saturday.
