1967: Eastern New Mexico University President Charles Meister was feuding with Gov. David Cargo over the proposed use of Walker Air Force Base facilities in Roswell.

The base was scheduled to close and ENMU was making plans to open a branch campus on its grounds.

Cargo said Eastern had presented no feasibility report and that had to happen before “we have any clear idea at all on how to proceed.”

Meister said a 500-page feasibility report had been prepared that went “beyond the line of duty.”

Their differences were resolved and the ENMU-Roswell campus is today located on the west side of the former base.
