Rain, tornado warning hit area on Friday

December 29, 2019

It didn’t feel like spring, but eastern New Mexico experienced day-long showers and even a tornado warning on Friday.

The National Weather Service did not confirm an actual tornado, but it did issue a tornado warning for the Ranchvale area northwest of Clovis late Friday afternoon. Storms also produced spring-like rains across the region, with Farwell recording 1.41 inches of rain during multiple cloudbursts.

Clovis saw almost three-quarters of an inch of rain downtown, pushing its year-long moisture total above 22 inches.

Other area rainfall totals on Friday:

• Portales: 0.89

• Bovina: 0.76

• Elida: 0.49

• Melrose: 0.06

No rain is forecast for the region the rest of 2019, meaning October will likely go down as the year’s wettest month — 6.18 inches overall in Clovis, with almost all of it falling Oct. 1-4, according to NWS.

Temperatures through New Year’s Day are expected to range from highs near 50 to lows around 20 degrees.
