ELIDA — Grady’s girls came out firing on all cylinders Tuesday night. Especially junior forward Teryn Foote.
Foote poured in 33 points and the Lady Bronchos dominated the middle two quarters in a 70-49 victory over Elida.
Junior guard Isabel Martinez added 12 points for Grady (2-0), which extended a 14-13 lead at the quarter to 10 points at halftime. The Lady Bronchos also controlled the boards, Elida girls coach Eric Brown noted.
“They ran a trapping press on us and forced some turnovers,” he said. “We’re small, and we’ve got to get better and blocking out.”
The Lady Tigers (0-1) did most of their damage from long range. Junior guard Tiffany Ortega finished with five 3-pointers and 27 points, while junior guard Maislyn Ferguson went 4-for-4 from distance — all in the third quarter — and tallied 16 points.
In other girls action on Tuesday:
Snyder 58, Farwell 55, OT — At Lubbock Christian’s Rip Griffin Center, junior Presley Agee’s 3-pointer sent the game into overtime, but the Class 4A Lady Tigers used the free throw line (6-of-10) in the extra session to pull out the win.
Agee finished with three 3-pointers and a game-high 29 points for the Class 2A Lady Blue (4-4). Senior Paulina Rodriguez added 10 points.
Senior guard Kamiah James scored 23 points and junior guard Kamiah Davis added 15 for Snyder (3-4), which erased a seven-point deficit in the final quarter.
Roy/Mosquero 60, Clovis Christian 57 — At Mosquero, the Lady Longhorns broke open a fairly close game with a 26-point fourth quarter to win their season opener.
Junior guard Riley Clavel scored 25 points for Roy/Mosquero, while freshman forward Tanna Crisp added 11.
Junior forward Lola DeGroot notched 13 points to pace the Lady Eagles (1-1).
In boys games on Tuesday:
Elida 59, Grady 54 — The host Tigers held off a furious fourth-quarter rally to subdue the Bronchos in their season opener.
Trailing by 19 points, Grady (1-1) outscored the Tigers 25-11 in the final stanza, getting as close as four points with about two minutes left.
“I was pleased with our effort in the fourth quarter,” Grady coach Jonathan Langan said. “We knew we were capable of that. Elida did a really good job of controlling tempo for the first three quarters.”
Senior guards Tyce Delk and Colton Ferguson scored 18 points and 15 points, respectively, for the Tigers. Senior forward Chisum Rush led all scorers with 23 points for Grady.
Roy/Mosquero 70, CCS 63 — The Eagles erupted for 45 second-half points, but couldn’t overcome their scoring struggles over the first two stanzas in falling to 1-1 for the season.
CCS cut what had been a 22-point deficit to two points in the final minute, but the Longhorns (1-0) salted it away at the free throw line.
“If we could’ve been just a little better in the first 10 minutes, we would’ve been fine,” CCS coach Trent McKay said. “But we didn’t give up.”
Junior forward Tyler Lingnau led three Eagles in double figures with 27 points, while junior Dawson Teune had 13 and freshman Noah Gershon 10.
Senior forward Marcus Padilla scored 24 points for Roy/Mosquero.
