Presidential residence on CCC agenda

CLOVIS — With a new president coming soon, Clovis Community College officials have turned their attention to making sure he’s got the ideal place to call home.

The CCC Board of Trustees will today consider a variety of fixes to its presidential residence at 1621 E. 21st St. in Clovis.

The $186,770 of work, to be funded through CCC’s Building, Renewal and Replacement funds, includes four primary components:

• Interior painting ($14,857.49)

• Concrete patio replacement in the rear ($13,037.32)

• Demolition of the pool house and pool ($35,620.48)

• Construction of a patio and pavilion ($105,475.27).

The house has been vacant since Becky Rowley departed in June to become president at Santa Fe Community College.

“It is just normal wear and tear that hadn’t been fixed over the years,” Interim President Robin Kuykendall said. “There have really been no renovations for a long time.”

The job requires trustee approval because the quote from Nick Griego and Sons exceeds $100,000, but the college does not need to submit the project to the New Mexico Higher Education Department because the job is less than $300,000.

The trustees had the option of selling the property and purchasing or leasing a different one, but the state’s antidonation clause requires the college to sell the house for nothing below the appraised value.

“It was something that was discussed, but I’m not sure how far that got, honestly,” Kuykendall said. “With the type of repairs needed, it’s difficult. Somebody wants a good deal, but being able to sell it under market value was (not something CCC can legally consider).”

Charles Nwankwo was initially slated to come aboard as CCC’s president in January, but his arrival has been pushed back a month due to some business he has to take care of in Arizona. Kuykendall said the delay is beneficial because it gives CCC time to get the home renovations done. She’ll continue to serve as interim president until Nwankwo arrives, and her future position is to be determined. She was previously director of extended learning and division chair for occupational technology.

Other items for today’s 8 a.m. meeting at the college include:

• A review of first-quarter financial statements for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

• A request to renew employee benefits. The health insurance plan includes a 2.2% increase for the custom PPO plan and a 9.1% increase for the BlueSecure Plan. The dental plan premium, an optional add-on paid entirely by employees, will drop 10.9%.
