Kenyawani has sixth-place finish, Cheptoo finishes ninth.
SILVER CITY— Behind a sixth-place finish from Aminata Kenyawani, and a solid all-around effort, the Eastern New Mexico women’s cross country team took third Saturday in the Lone Star Conference Championships.
The Greyhounds had two of the top 10 finishers, with all five of their scoring runners placing in the top 30 in the 6K race at Western New Mexico.
Lubbock Christian easily bested West Texas A&M for third place with 64 points and had the medalist in Amira Cunningham (22:29.12).
The Lady Buffs scored 90 to finish just ahead of the Greyhounds at 90 points.
Kenyawani finished at 23:01.54, with Evaline Cheptoo ninth at 23:14.58. Other scoring runners for ENMU were Neri Gertraide (17th, 23:49.54), Kayla Sisneros (28th, 24:22.07) and Mason Swanson (30th, 24:28.6).
Also running for the women were Viridiana Ruiz (53rd, 25:10.9; 61), Amalia Delgado (61st, 25:35.53), Caroline Bachman (83rd, 26:12.93), Sierra Quinones (95th, 26:48.19 and Lauren Griego (108th, 27:35.35).
The men’s team finished 13th. West Texas A&M won the meet with 39 points and had four of the top 10 finishers, including medalist Ezekiel Kipchirchir at 24:56 in the 8K event.
Jessie Madrid was 32nd at 27:02.7 to lead the Greyhounds. Other ENMU men’s finishers were 75. Alejandro Chavez (75th, 28:27.4), Ivar Moinat (76th, 28:27.7), Jon Fuentes (82nd, 28:39.5), Shane Rinde (114th, 30:17.8) and Toby Kirk (127th, 32:52.9).
The Greyhounds are off a week before the South Central Regional championship Nov. 9 at West Texas A&M.
