1969: Cook’s Discount department store was preparing to open in Clovis’ Hilltop Plaza.
A newspaper advertisement promised, “There’s a wonderful future for you at Cook’s, one of the fastest growing department store chains in the nation.”
The ad also read, “We pay premium for experience, but will be happy to train bright, ambitious people who may not have retail experience.”
Employees would receive “excellent pay, hospitalization, paid vacation and unlimited opportunity for advancement,” the company reported.
Jobs were open in automotive, hardware, small appliances, sporting goods, plumbing, housewares, toys and other departments.
