Curry board tables vehicle policy

October 9, 2019

CLOVIS — The Curry County Board of Commissioners discussed changes to the county's vehicle accident prevention policy during a special meeting Tuesday morning.

After reviewing the policy changes the board decided to address several issues throughout, ultimately tabling approval to wait for a more thorough revision.

The policy was last updated in 2007 and County Attorney Steve Doerr and County Manager Lance Pyle advised further revisions to eliminate redundancies and add several specific policies proposed by commissioners during discussion.

Discussed changes include requiring accidents involving county vehicles to be reported within 12 hours of occurrence and requiring mandatory inspection of vehicles by all county employees before use.

Daily inspections by most employees would only be surface level, checking for things like unreported dents or garbage left by previous users. A more thorough inspection by the county safety officer would be done quarterly.

Other highlights from the 9 a.m. meeting at the Commission Chambers include:

• The commission received a report from the road department for September. The report outlined work done throughout the month as well as the purchase of the new equipment approved by the board during meetings last month.

This includes a street roller, broom and two pickups.

• The board approved a revision to provide a proper resolution for an alternative Election Day polling place for the 2019 Regular Local Election.

Construction at the formerly designated location, the Youth Recreation Building, will not be completed in time so the city will allow the county to use the nearby Clovis Aquatic Center instead.

A sign will be posted at the Youth Building and the Aquatic Center will be marked in an attempt to minimize confusion with voters.

The commission will meet again next Tuesday at 9 a.m. at the Commission Chambers.
