Cheptoo leads ENMU women at Texas Tech invite

LUBBOCK — Evaline Cheptoo finished 18th, leading the way for Eastern New Mexico’s women’s cross country team to an eighth-place finish at the Texas Tech Open Saturday at the Lubbock Christian University golf course.

Cheptoo crossed the finish line in 19:49.7. The Greyhounds had two other top-40 runners in Amalia Delgado (20:28, 30th) and Kayla Sisneros (20:50.4, 39th). Also running for the Greyhound women were Viridiana Ruiz (21:29.8), 55th), Caroline Bachman (22:37, 83rd) Sierra Quinones (22:58.3, 86th), Lauren Griego (22:58.9, 87th), Esther Kipkoech (25:31.1, 100th) and Tara Mayes (27:34.1, 105th).

Flomena Asekol of New Mexico Junior College won the 5K run at 17:44.9. The host Red Raiders easily won the meet, with all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top 11.

For the men, Clovis freshman Jon Fuentes paced the Greyhounds with a 33rd-place finish of 28:20.7 as the Green and Silver finished 10th.

Other Greyhound racers included Jessie Madrid (28:46.6, 41st), Ivar Moinat (29:44.7, 55th), Toby Kirk (31:28, 76th) and Shane Rinde (32:51.1, 84th).

Lubbock Christian won the meet, taking three of the top seven places, including Kenyan Abdi second (26:10.4) and Brian Kipchumba third (26:23.6).

Wayland Baptist’s Dennis Kiptoo handily won the meet, crossing the finish line at 25:48.

The Greyhounds have a short week of practice before they head to Hobbs for the New Mexico Junior College Invitational on Friday.
