Portales Woman’s Club

The Portales Woman’s Club started its 117th year on Sept. 11 with plenty of celebrations, including the initiation of 10 new club members. Past President June Ferguson conducted the initiation ceremony for Quaylene Parkey, Julie Bridges, Yvonne Garcia, Amanda Goins, Judy Clark, Mary Orozco, Joann Rackler, Dawn Privett, Doris Welch and Mickie Stowe.

President Sheryl Borden called the meeting to order following the initiation.

The meeting program was provided by Kimberlee Smith, TRIO director at Eastern New Mexico University.

There were eight guests and 33 members present.

The club approved May 8 meeting minutes, filing the treasurer’s report for audit and new club bylaws and standing rules.

Cindy Miller, civic chair, reported on the Pioneer Days Luncheon, which nine members helped operate at the Roosevelt County Fair.

Borden and Amber Hamilton were elected as delegates to the upcoming District III Convention to be held in Portales on Oct. 5.

The club approved a board recommendation that the Portales Woman’s Club co-sponsor an open house and silent art auction at the club building 2 p.m.-4 p.m. Oct. 6. The public is invited for viewing and purchasing of the art, and refreshments will be provided.

Miller also distributed a signup sheet for the Peanut Festival, to be held October 19-21.

Edwina Gower, Hostess committee chair, and Jessica Comacho, Wanda Pettus and Alisa Boswell-Gore, who served with her, were recognized and thanked.

The next meeting will be 11:30 a.m. at the club building. Curt Jaynes of GardenSource is scheduled to present the program.
