National Night Out set for Tuesday

August 4, 2019

CLOVIS — If you’ve ever wanted to get to know the members of your local police force, see a K-9 unit and SWAT team in action or drop your friendly neighborhood cop into a dunk tank, Tuesday is your night.

That’s when Greene Acres Park is set to host the annual National Night Out Celebration from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“This is a way for us to reach out to the public and strengthen those ties,” said Lt. Trevor Thron of the CPD. “It gives the public a chance to come out and meet us, to view our equipment and ask us questions.”

The CPD works with the National Association of Town Watch and other emergency response and state agencies to host the event devoted to breaking down barriers and building a sense of camaraderie between the public and law enforcement.

According to Thron, the event grows bigger every year.

“We’re hoping to do a SWAT demo with our team this year, which we’ve never done in the past,” Thron said. “We usually just set up a static display but want to do something live this year.”

The K-9 demonstration is slated to return as well, but it is undecided which of the attending agencies will have their canine officers present.

Two new agencies will be present this year, with the New Mexico State Parks and Parmer County Sheriff’s Department both agreeing to send representatives to meet the Clovis community.

Returning agencies include the New Mexico State Police, Curry County Sheriff’s Department, Clovis Fire Department, Cannon Air Force Base Security Forces and New Mexico Game and Fish.

Many activities and services will be offered for attendees, such as the Dunk-A-Cop dunking booth, a car seat clinic with child ID kits, Curry County DWI Task Force’s DWI Karts and a variety of informative displays.

The County Wellness Council will also hold its Back To School Health Fair with National Night Out. Health-oriented agencies from the county are invited to come set out a booth to get involved with the community. Free health screenings for children will be available.

Participating vendors are required to donate two backpacks filled with school supplies to be distributed to schools in Melrose, Grady and Texico.
