Three Hounds named to academic team

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association honored three of Eastern New Mexico University’s top athletes Monday, according to a release from the college.

Senior sprinter Danee Bustos, junior sprinter Kandice Miles and junior middle distance runner Ivar Moinat each received an All-Academic Award from the association. Additionally, the women’s team received an academic team award.

The association gives all-academic honors to any student-athlete who maintained a 3.25 or higher GPA and reached an automatic or provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA national championship meet.

Bustos reached the NCAA Division II championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, competing in the 200 at the indoor championships and the 400 relay at the outdoor championships.

Miles was also on the 400 relay team, which finished fifth at the outdoor championships — its best finish at an NCAA championship meet. She also collected first-team honors in the 100 and second-team honors in the 200.

Moinat reached the NCAA Championships in both the indoor and outdoor seasons, competing in the 800-meter run in each meet. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native scored All-American First Team honors during the indoor season after placing seventh at the championship meet.

To receive recognition as an all-academic team, the program must have an average GPA of 3.0 or higher. The team posted a 3.29 GPA, tops in the Lone Star Conference and good for a second consecutive USTFCCCA team award.
