Area coaches to be honored by NMHSCA

Texico’s Ty Thatcher was named the baseball coach of the year for all classifications, and a pair of other local coaches will be honored with him later this month by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

Among the awards are former Fort Sumner track and field and volleyball coach Lisa McMath, who is one of four inductees into the association’s hall of honor. She won 10 consecutive girls track titles, plus six state volleyball championships.

She will be joined as 2019 inductees by Mayfield’s Michael Bradley, Rio Rancho’s Toby Manzanares and Spencer Sielschott of the New Mexico Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

They will be honored during the 75th Annual NMHSCA coaches clinic at the Crown Plaza in Albuquerque. Also honored will be Elida’s Darrell Chenault, who will receive a volleyball milestone award.

Thatcher was also selected as 2A coach of the year, and the All-2A squad had plenty of Texico athletes with six athletes getting seven spots — including player of the year Dalton Thatcher, who was selected as a first-team pitcher and shortstop.

Cole Rohrbach was the other first-team selection for the Wolverines, receiving the spot at first base. Second-team Texico selections were Seth Griego at pitcher and David Davalos at catcher, while Wolverines getting honorable mentions were pitcher Jake Zamora and third baseman Isaac Ortiz.

The Wolverines went 20-5 this season and defeated Estancia 13-3 to wrap up its fourth-consecutive title — the first three in Class 3A, the most recent in 2A.
