Houseboat blocks highway after accident

One man was injured in a collision Monday morning that left a houseboat stranded for hours blocking the highway approaching Cannon Air Force Base.

The two-vehicle incident took place at 11:40 a.m., when Ricky Lee, 56, of Somerset, Kentucky, "failed to yield" while turning left, westbound, onto U.S. 60/84 from the intersection with Curry Road O, officials said.

Lee was driving a 1998 Western Star semi-tractor pulling "an oversized houseboat," measuring almost 75 feet, according to a news release from Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller.

Mark Martinez, 45, of Albuquerque was driving eastbound on the highway in a 2017 Ford F150 pickup and struck the vehicle when it entered the intersection. He was transported to a Lubbock hospital where he remained Monday evening in "serious but stable" condition, the release said. Officials said Lee did not report any injuries.

Lee was traveling from Kentucky to Arizona, said the release. The houseboat, dubbed "Pretty Penny," remained on scene about four hours spanning the highway, which was closed to both directions of traffic from Curry Road N to State Road 311.

The investigation is ongoing "and enforcement action is pending," said the release.
