Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Tough day on the courts

Clovis and Portales tennis teams were in action Thursday with district battles against Lea County foes.

With the exception of the Ram girls, it wasn’t a great result for the local teams. Hobbs swept the Wildcats, beating the boys 6-3 and the girls 8-1.

Against Lovington, it was an 8-1 win for the Portales girls and a clean sweep for the Lovington boys.

In Clovis, the visiting Eagles swept all six doubles flights. Hobbs split the six singles boys flights with the Wildcats, and took five of the girls singles matches.

The Wildcats got victories in No. 1 singles with David Heath beating Alex Harris 6-4, 6-1; No. 5 singles as Brandon Heath topped Alejandro Palomino 7-6 (7-4), 6-4; and No. 6 singles with Jahlen Yager topping Sebastian Diaz 6-1, 6-4.

On the girls side, Ayia Alsaleh was the lone victor for Clovis, topping Belen Aranda 6-2, 6-1 in No. 5 singles.

Clovis returns to action Friday at Roswell.

At Lovington, the Portales girls had little trouble as no match went to a third set. The Wildcats’ lone victory came in No. 2 singles, where Yvette Peters topped Laura Blaeser 6-1, 6-4.

The boys was a rout the other way, as only two matches saw Portales win more than three games. Both involved junior Drake Long, who pushed Renato Onofre to three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3) in No. 5 singles and then battled with Brett Horton against David Corrales and Onofre in No. 2 doubles for a 6-1, 7-5 setback.

The teams will be back in action this week with district tournament play. Monday’s boys play will see Lovington host Artesia and Portales host Goddard, both at 3 p.m. Tuesday will feature 3 p.m. gilrs matches with Lovington at Artesia and NMMI at Portales. Boys winners play Thursday and girls winners play Friday.
