Five marks broken

CANYON — Eastern New Mexico broke five school records, and added three provisional qualifying times for the Division II national championships during the two-day West Texas A&M Classic and Multi.

The women’s team broke four Greyhound records, including a 4,107-point performance in the heptathlon by Portales native Jessica Campbell.

Freshman Kayla Stephens set a new school mark with 3.35 meters in the pole vault, breaking Hannah Cabledue’s mark of 3.28 set last year in the LSC championships.

Kandice Miles and Maijah Mathis broke their own records in the 200 and 100, respectively, and each earned provisional qualifying times.

Miles’ 23.95 in the 200 put her fifth in what could be considered a competitive race, as her fifth-place finish is currently Division II’s sixth-fastest time so far this season.

Mathis had a pair of provisional qualifying times, finishing 11th in the 100 at 11.99 and taking eighth in the 200 at 24.33. The 100 time is the 26-fastest in Division II, while the 200 time is 20th.

Campbell won the javelin at 35.53 as part of her heptathlon performance, and easily broke the 2015 record of 3,895 set by Candace Eckels.

Other top finishers for the ENMU women included Mercy Rotich winning the 5,000 (18:05.67) and the 400 relay team of Miles, Mathis, Zhane Gurule and Lateria Slaughter taking third with a 46.89.

For the ENMU men, Ivar Moinat earned a provisional qualifying mark with a second-place 1:51.03 in the 800. He was also part of a second-place 1,600 relay team as he, Travonne Armstead, Brandon Chavez and Andrew Villegas broke their own ENMU record with a 3:15.48.

Chavez was third in the 400 at 48.45.

The Greyhounds are in action this weekend at the Ross Black Invitational, hosted by New Mexico Junior College.
