Portales native Blakey named scholar athlete

PLAINVIEW, Texas — Portales native Kambrey Blakey was recognized as an NAIA scholar athlete, according to a release from Wayland Baptist University.

Blakey, a 6-foot junior, averaged 11.8 points and 4.6 rebounds a game on 47 percent shooting. She started the final 21 games of the season for the Flying Queens.

She was joined by teammates Morgan Bennett and Maci Merket as scholar athletes and one of 148 total selections in NAIA Division I women’s basketball.

Blakey was also one of five Flying Queens named to the All-Sooner Athletic Conference, earning honorable mention. Her teammate and former Greyhound Kaylee Edgemon was named newcomer of the year.

The Flying Queens went 29-6 on the season, and fell to Our Lady of the Lake in the second round of the NAIA national tournament in Billings, Mont.

Clovis High to host football showcase event May 5

CLOVIS — Clovis High School will host the New Mexico Showcase May 5 at Leon Williams Stadium.

The showcase, an effort of Coach O Recruiting and 806 High School Sports Connection, will be held 1 p.m.-5 p.m., with players from grades 7-12 invited.

Registration is available online at 806hssc.com for $40 per player. Early-bird registration through April 7 is $30, and same-day registration is $50.

International Finals Youth Rodeo seeking registrants

SHAWNEE, Okla. — Applications are sought for the International Finals Youth Rodeo, to be held July 7-12 at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.

Registration for the 27th annual rodeo will be available Sunday at IFYR.com. The rodeo offers more than $250,000 in prizes.

Participants must have completed ninth grade and be 18 or younger as of Aug. 1, 2019.

Events include cowgirls barrel racing, cowgirls pole bending, cowgirls breakaway roping, cowgirls goat tying, team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, bull riding, saddle bronc riding and bareback riding. Entry fees are $150 per event.
