'Cat track wins second straight meet

RIO RANCHO — Clovis’ boys track and field team is now 2-for-2.

Friday in Rio Rancho, the Wildcats won their second straight meet to open the season, capturing first at the Cleveland Invite with 125.5 points, 35.5 better than the second-place finish notched by host Cleveland. Volcano Vista was third with 71 points.

The ’Cats were helped by five different first-place finishes — Jon Fuentes in the 1,600-meter run (4:25.82); Darion Morgan-Haskins in the triple jump (43 feet, 1.75 inches); Pacer Hill in the pole vault (13 feet, 6 inches); and both the Clovis 1,600-meter sprint medley (3:46.58) and 4x100-meter relay (43.40) teams.

Clovis was especially effective in the 1,600-meter run, where the old 1-2-3 cross country punch of Fuentes, TJ Gregg and Jerrick Maldonado was at it again in track. Gregg was second (4:29.66) behind Fuentes on Friday, with Maldonado taking fourth (4:29.88). By seizing three of the top four spots, the ’Cats racked up 15 points in just that event alone.

Clovis’ Montez Wright bagged two seconds, in the 100- (11.14) and 200-meter (22.70) dashes.

Other Wildcat seconds were posted by: Fuentes in the 800 (2:04.30); Brandon Mason in the long jump (19 feet, 3 inches); Kris Byrd in the high jump (5 feet, 10 inches); and Clovis in the 4x400- (3:31.50) and 4x200-meter (1:35.19) relays.

Tallying Clovis thirds were: Jacob Moon in the 100-meter dash (11:31); Morgan-Haskins in the long jump (19 feet, 1.75 inches, tied with Los Alamos’ Dima Tretiak); Malik Phillips in the triple jump (41 feet, 11 inches); Stephen Acosta in the shot put (44 feet, 1 inch); Bryce Cabeldue in the discus (131 feet, 7 inches); Jaylen Mason in the javelin (158 feet, 5 inches).

Clovis will compete in the Amarillo Relays this Friday, beginning at 11 a.m.
