Foxes reach 1A title game

March 17, 2019

RIO RANCHO — Noah Maxwell had 17 points, and the Fort Sumner Foxes pulled away in the second half to top Maxwell 47-37 Thursday at Santa Ana Star Center to return to the state title round.

Jude Segura added 15 for the Foxes (23-8), who will face either Melrose or Quemado in the 6 p.m. championship game.

Fort Sumner won the Class 2A title last season, and was moved to Class 1A after the New Mexico Activities consolidated its six classifications into five.

The second-seeded Foxes led by as many as 17 in the second half, after falling behind early in the first quarter. They enjoyed advantages in points off turnovers (20-5), in the paint (20-14) and on second chances (16-6).

Statistically, it was a forgettable afternoon for both teams shooting the ball, as the teams went a combined 31-of-107 from the field and 6-of-49 from 3-point range.

Brothers Kaden and Kolten Riggs were the only double-figure scorer for Maxwell, which ends its season at 22-5. Kaden had 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Kolten struggled with 11 points on 5-of-22 shooting and missed all nine of his 3-point attempts.

The teams were much better at the line, with the Foxes going 10-of-13 and the Bears 6-of-9. All 84 points on the afternoon were scored by the 10 starters.
