ENMU softball falls to Cameron 7-2

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s softball team didn’t fare much better than its baseball counterparts Friday, beginning a short homestand by falling to Cameron 7-2 at Greyhound Field.

The Hounds tied up the contest in the bottom of the second at 2-2, but couldn't keep pace with a Cameron offense that followed up two runs in the top of the second with two-run frames in both the third and fourth innings.

Senior Kimberly Herron suffered the loss, knocking her season record to 6-7. Junior Precious Aguirre recorded the lone multi-hit game for the Hounds, going 2-for-3 at the plate.

Eastern New Mexico utilized quality plate discipline and walked the bases loaded after a two-run single in the top half of the second inning put the Aggies ahead 2-0. Senior Emma Gary pinch hit for sophomore Parker Smith and rolled one over to the shortstop, who tagged out Herron between second and third, but threw the ball away to allow Gary to advance by way of error while scoring freshman Haleigh Behncke from third.

Junior Elysa Rodriguez was hit by a pitch in the ensuing at-bat, reloading the bases for the Greyhounds, but couldn't manage any more offense. The Aggies responded with three solo home runs over the course of the next two innings to pull away throughout the final few frames.

Rodriguez, Behncke, senior Hanna Gary and third baseman Lauren Likes were the other Hounds to record hits on an afternoon in which the offense totaled six hits.

Eastern New Mexico and Cameron wrapped up the Lone Star Conference series on Saturday afternoon.
