Portales man convicted on drug charges

December 19, 2018

PORTALES — A Portales man was found guilty Tuesday on various charges resulting from a 2017 undercover narcotics operation.

Jose Enriques, 42, was convicted of Trafficking a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine), a second-degree felony, and Conspiracy to Commit Trafficking a Controlled Substance, a third-degree felony, according to a release from the Ninth Judicial District.

The charges stem from an undercover operation by the Region V Drug Task Force in July of 2017. A search warrant turned up eight individually packaged baggies of methamphetamine valued at $5,000.

The jury heard testimony from law enforcement as well as an expert in forensic drug analysis from the New Mexico State Crime Lab during the one-day trial. Judge Donna Mowrer sentenced Enriques to 13 years in the New Mexico Department of Corrections, with three years suspended in favor of supervised probation.

Deputy District Attorney Quentin Ra prosecuted the case for the State. Enriques was represented by Francis Rio, Attorney at Law. An attempt to contact Rio was unsuccessful Tuesday evening.
