ENMU roundup: Volleyball team wins LSC opener

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — While the season might not be off to the kind of start Eastern New Mexico’s volleyball team may have wanted, the start in the Lone Star Conference is just fine so far.

The Greyhounds scored the final four points of a back-and-forth third set to take a 27-25, 25-17, 25-21 sweep Friday at Midwestern State.

Jasmine Gannon had 15 kills and Sara Tuioti-Mariner 10 for the Greyhounds (3-6, 1-0 LSC), who go right back at it tomorrow at Cameron.

Eastern looked like it would take a surprisingly comfortable win in what was a tight first set, thanks to a 7-1 run with a pair of Tuito-Mariner kills that put them up 23-20.

But the Mustangs (2-6, 0-1) scored the next three on a trio of Hound errors, and eventually set up game point on a Sarah Eakin kill. But back-to-back-to-back kills by Tuioti-Mariner, Gannon and Lauryn Bresnahan closed it out.

Eastern pulled away midway through the second set, taking a 16-8 lead on the power of a 5-0 run. The Mustangs never got closer than four the rest of the set.

Tuioti-Mariner and Julie Tucker each had three blocks to lead the Greyhounds, while Kaitlyn Kluna had 17 assists.

The win was the first match of the season for Eastern not to go to at least a fourth set.

Erin Richburg had eight kills to lead the Mustangs.

Women’s soccer falls at Fort Lewis — Courtney Wamboldt led an offensive flurry in the final 21 minutes, with an assist and the game-winning goal with 18 seconds left in regulation as Fort Lewis avoided overtime with a 2-1 victory Friday.

Skylar Barnes also scored for Fort Lewis, 1-1-1, which has so far only played Lone Star Conference opponents and hosts West Texas A&M on Sunday.

The Greyhounds (0-1-1) looked to force their second-straight overtime game when Bailey Bosley scored her first tally of the season on a shot near midfield.

Both teams had six shots on goal, with Britt Blomso making five saves for the Skyhawks.

Eastern resumes its season Sunday at Adams State.
