1970: A 20-year-old newspaper press operator was seriously injured when his left hand was caught in a piece of equipment.

George Banister, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Banister, 124 Mesa in Clovis, was working his last day at the paper before quitting to return to college, the Clovis News-Journal reported, when the accident happened.

He underwent surgery at Clovis Memorial Hospital for the removal of four fingers crushed by a large roller that compressed pages.

Banister recovered. Today he works for Allsup's convenience stores, headquartered in Clovis.
