PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico and Southern Nazarene both knew they’d be entering this season in somewhat of a rebuilding mode.
The Greyhounds showed Thursday they’re a lot further in the process, building a 2-0 lead less than 17 minutes in, en route to a 3-1 victory at Greyhound Stadium in the season opener for both teams and the first game under new coach Jon Fridal.
Lucas Vaz had a goal and an assist for the Greyhounds, who posted a 9-1 shooting advantage in the first half.
Gabriel Peres and Fernando Lozano also scored for ENMU, which posted 18 goals all of last season.
Junior Ryan Flores stopped four of the shots on goal he faced on the day, eventually losing the shutout on Jovanny Hernandez’ 84th-minute tally.
The Greyhounds got on the board with 14:34 gone, as Peres dribbled in from 40 yards out against defender Bojan Tolmac and got his shot to bang in off the right crossbar.
Only 94 seconds later, Eastern struck again, as Vaz got a pass ahead of the Crimson Storm defense. Lozano got to the ball before a diving Reagan Haydon and lofted it just over him before leaping to avoid a collision and landing in full celebration mode.
Vad added the insurance goal in the 61st minute, taking a Jesus Garcia cross and chipping it past Haydon.
The Greyhounds are back in action Saturday, with a 1 p.m. home match against Oklahoma Baptist.
