Curry may rescind burn ban

CLOVIS — The burn ban in the unincorporated areas of Curry County, in place for 140 days, may no longer be needed. Curry County commissioners will vote on rescinding the ban at today's meeting.

In a memo to the commission, Fire and Safety Director David Kube said he recommends rescinding the ban due to improved drought conditions in the county. Kube said he has received about a dozen calls in the past week from citizens requesting to burn.

The burn ban has been in place since March 20.

Also on the agenda for today's meeting, scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in the commission chambers at the Curry County Administrative Complex, 417 Gidding St.:

• The commission will vote on the county's five-year road maintenance and construction plan following a request for public input.

The county received about a dozen calls and emails with suggestions and Curry County Manager Lance Pyle said each of those roads were included in the plan.

• The commission will vote on an easement agreement with Plateau Telecommunications. The agreement would provide a fiber internet connection to the county's new road barn south of Clovis in exchange for an easement on the property for Plateau to build an electronics cabinet and a $5,000 credit for future Plateau work in the county, the estimated cost of providing fiber to the road barn.

• A retirement plaque will be presented to Mike Reeves, who retired from the Curry County Sheriff's Office last week following 35 years in law enforcement.

• Vision 2020, the group promoting Clovis as the site for the state's next racetrack and casino will give a presentation to the commission. Pyle said no action will be taken.
