Hospital bomb threat cleared quickly

August 4, 2018

PORTALES — A bomb threat called in to Roosevelt General Hospital soon after midnight Friday was cleared within hours, according to Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker, but the incident remains under investigation.

Parker said deputies responded to the threat report in the “early morning, somewhere around 2 or 3 a.m.” and “assessed the situation as quick as we could,” ultimately clearing the scene around 6 a.m.

Cannon Air Force Base’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team joined the response, and an “explosive-sniffing dog swept the building and parking lot.”

Parker said deputies have assisted previously on bomb threat incidents, possibly in the city or at the university, “but to my recollection this is the first one the county has had, in my career, so far.”

Parker reported no injuries, and said he believed the bomb threat was a hoax.
