1963: The U.S. Air Force sent "sleek F-105s" through their paces at the Melrose Bombing Range in a demonstration for media.
The bombing run would be completed again two days later in a Falcon '63 program open to the public. A pair of buildings were scheduled to be blown up in the public demonstration.
About 600 tickets had been given to Clovis-Portales residents. The gates to the bombing range were scheduled to be closed 30 minutes prior to the demonstration of the nation's air power.
The F-105 "Thunderchief" was one of the primary attack aircraft the U.S. used in Vietnam. Its military service began in 1958. It was retired in the early 1980s.
