1968: Clovis was preparing to host "a three-day combination of business and frolic" when newspapermen (and women) arrived for the New Mexico Press Association's summer convention.

The convention was set to open with a cocktail party at the Holiday Inn. A dinner and dance were slated to wrap up activities at the hotel, the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Gov. David Cargo was among keynote speakers. Others included Amarillo Globe News Publisher Wes Izzard and Amarillo newspaper photographer Woodfin Camp.

A United Press International foreign correspondent was also on the speaking roster, along with Col. Bob Scott, commander of the 832nd Air Division at Cannon Air Force Base.

Scott would retire from Cannon two years later, having earned four Silver Star citations for valor in combat.

He died in 2006 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
