1968: Clovis hosted a "parade of flags" from Grand Street to Marshall Junior High.

All of the flags in the parade were "owned and in most cases made by Charles Oakley of Clovis," the Clovis News-Journal reported.

Flags included "every flag which has flown over the United States and the flag of each of the 50 states," the newspaper reported.

Marchers included Cannon Air Force Base personnel, the Shriners Drum and Bugle Corps, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Navy Mothers Club, the 4-H Horse Club and youth league baseball players.

Oakley, a salesman for Southern Union Gas Co., was widely known for his expertise on flag procedures and for his knowledge of history.

He died at his Clovis home on Aug. 29, 1983, at age 79.
