PORTALES — Another day, another All-Region selection. For Eastern New Mexico baseball player Alex DeLaCruz, being honored as a Division II All-Region player has become a pretty common sight.
The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) was the most recent in a long line of accolades for the senior second baseman, honoring both him and Greyhound teammate Garlind Webster with the award on Wednesday.
DeLaCruz, who was honored as a First Team South Central Regional selection by both the Division II Collegiate Commissioners as well as National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association last week, has now been honored as an All-Region player five times in his career.
DeLaCruz, who was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-South Central Region First Team, led the Lone Star Conference in batting average (.380) in 2018, while ranking second in hits (70), third in stolen bases (26) and in the top 10 in a number of other offensive categories.
Webster, a fellow senior, capped off his career by being named a Second Team ABCA/Rawlings All-South Central Region selection. The two-time All-LSC selection posted a .919 fielding percentage in 40 games at third base in 2018.
At the plate, he ranked fifth in the league in batting average (.373), as well as fifth in slugging percentage (.643). Webster had a 10-game hitting streak at one point in the season, and finished with 11 multiple-hit games. Overall, Webster had seven home runs and 35 RBIs to finish second and third on the Greyhounds in ’18, respectively.
The duo, by the way, helped ENMU to 56 wins over the past two seasons, which ranks as the second best two-year stretch in program history, trailing only 1995-96 (63).
