Pair of pole vaulters notch state titles

ALBUQUERQUE — After the first day of the Class 4A-6A state track meets, both the Clovis and Portales boys are in the early trophy hunt, and a pair of pole vaulters are state champions.

The meet concludes today at the University of New Mexico.

Burgin Foster repeated as Class 6A pole vault champion, going 14-6 to go out No. 1 in his senior year. Foster won the event in 2017 with a leap of 14-0.

He led a Wildcat squad that was tied for fourth after the first day with 10 points. Hobbs leads the way at 30 points, and it's a crowded field after that with Eldorado (14), Cleveland (13) Rio Rancho and Clovis (10 each).

Also scoring for Clovis is Kris Byrd, who went fourth in the high jump at 6-0.

The Portales boys are in second place in the Class 4A boys competition with 15 points. Silver is in the lead with 19, followed by the Rams, Taos (12), Robertson (10) and Bernalillo (9).

Junior Aiden Cabeldue kept up the family tradition in pole vault, jumping 13 feet to claim the 4A title. His sister Hannah, now a member of the Eastern New Mexico track team, won state three times while father Dustin has held the PHS record at 14-2 since 1992. As a sophomore, the younger Cabeldue failed to score in the 2017 meet.

Portales also got a third-place finish from Julian Urioste in the high jump (6-0) and third from Philip Blidi in the discus (136-9).

The Clovis girls have six points so far, with Zamaurie Spillman third in the discus (110-11) and freshman Mikyla Harkley fifth in long jump (17-10).

Clovis is in fifth place with those six points, trailing Rio Rancho (12), La Cueva and Hobbs (9 each) and Cleveland (8).

The Portales girls did not score on the first day. The 4A girls field is led by Taos with 15 points, followed by Hope Christian at 13 and Silver with nine.
