Reporter's notebook: North vs. south

It’s north versus south in a poll to decide the best green chile in New Mexico.

A USA Today Reader’s Choice 2018 poll shows El Patron Cafe in Las Cruces sitting in the number one spot, followed by El Farolito in El Rito.

While El Patron is touted on the poll’s website for presenting its “spicy, but not overpowering” chile in everything from nachos to pineapple upside-down cake, El Farolito is credited with having “more fans than the town has residents.”

The competition is certainly stiff, with other entries including Sadies’s (Albuquerque) and Chope’s Bar and Cafe (La Mesa), but this reporter’s favorite green chile purveyors sit at dead last.

Mac’s La Sierra in Albuquerque is better known for its steak fingers than its chile, but those enchiladas are undeniable.
